Is it possible to set up an irrevocable general power of attorney?

Is it possible to set up an irrevocable general power of attorney? I would like to be the principal granting irrevocable power of attorney to my long-time girlfriend with her as my agent. I COMPLETELY understand that one would probably strongly recommend against this, but I nonetheless have my mind made up to do so if it is possible.

  1. Although the reason for your desire to do this is absent, you clearly recognize that this is not a reasonable or necessary thing to do and I would certainly emphatically recommend against this.

Having said that, it is possible to create an irrevocable general power of attorney and it does exist in several, mostly business, relationships. Perhaps you might consider putting in a “sunset” clause by which the power would end after a certain period of time or create some other conditions that would trigger a termination of the power.
