When can you break a lease
My girlfriend and I were attacked by her ex-boyfriend at her current resedence. He broke in and tried to hit me with a 2×4. He has a history of coming to her place, sometimes acting violently and hurting her. He was arrested this last time. If he is released, she wants to move so he doesn’t know where to find her. Is this a good enough reason for her to be released from a rental agreement?

Yes, it is and there is new legislation on the subject – go read RCW Title 59, Chapter 18 towards the end – around section .450 somewhere.

it gives very specific directions on how to get out of a lease agreement when DV has occurred. Read the entire relevant statute, not just the heading or the first sentence.

The prosecutor’s office likely has a DV victim’s advocate who can put you in touch with the DV victims’ address protection program, a useful way to go underground. They can help you with this part of your problem.

    Best wishes. Powell
