Can I lose my job?

Can I lose my job?
I am currently employed by a government agency. I was contacted by the employer in reference to a rental form that was provided to my landlord that was not completed by my employing agency with the correct information. The payroll person gave out my information in regards to my income without first contacting me for a signed release to the landlord. Now my employer is trying to have me fired can they do this?

You may have a claim for invasion of privacy but it does not sound like you had any damages from the disclosure by the agency to the landlord. (Thus, a lawsuit might not be very fruitful.)Rather, it sounds like the employer found something out and is now going to fire you because of it.

It was unclear from your posting what the potential discharge has to do with the landlord situation. If you want, send me an email, let me know why you are being fired and what the landlord has to do with the discharge, and I will try to give you some advice.

You should know, though, that unless you have a contract you are an employee at will. This means that you can quit or be fired at anytime, for any or no reason, with or without notice (as long as it is not disciminatory or otherwise illegal). So it is possible that the employer can discharge you without your having any recourse, even if they violated your privacy (depending on the facts of your case).

    Good luck.
