If my signature was forged as a co-signer on a rental lease agreement.

If my signature was forged as a co-signer on a rental lease agreement. How do I get out of this agreement?

  1. It will be up to you to prove that the signature is not yours. If you have a relationship with the person or are related to them, it will be a tough thing to do if not impossible. You should also call the police and report the forgery. If you don’t report it to the police, nobody will believe that you didn’t sign it. More likely they will believe you did sign it for your friend or relative and now you are just trying to get out of it by falsely claiming forgery. I’ve seen it many times in court.

  2. If it a forgery there is nothing to get out of. Take it to the police. Give them several samples of your signature from documents you signed in the past so they can compare them. The other person on the lease must have forged it, so they could be in criminal trouble. If you gave them permission to sign, then you probably are stuck. And, if you were living there for any period, you may be stuck too.
