a Living will is a document that instructs your doctors and family not to take extraordinary steps to prolong your life and designates one or more people to make the decision to terminate life support etc. for you.
Such a document would prevent such things as the Terry Schiavo case from becoming an issue in the event of your severe illness or injury.
It is not a requirement.
